During an emergency situation the utility should protect the public safety by making necessary repairs to the existing facilities complying as much as is practical with the requirements of the Utility Accommodation Manual. No advance permit approval is required. However, a permit shall be submitted within five (5) business days after the onset of the emergency for any excavation or boring within the roadbed structure or cutting of any paved surface.
Once the emergency is under control, the Utility shall notify the Department’s Area Engineer or Area Permit Inspector, as soon as practical, but no later than 2 hours after the onset of the emergency. If the emergency occurs during non-business hours, including weekends, the Utility shall contact the Department’s emergency operations number at 404-635-8000 (Atlanta Metro Area) or 1-888-635-8287 (Statewide). During this notification the department will record information about the emergency and issue an emergency permit number by phone. Use this number to apply for your permit within five (5) business days after the emergency. Once the emergency is under control, it's incumbent upon the utility to fulfill its obligation for a full permit application. This is done in an abbreviated fashion through the emergency permit process.
